i bought a 1978 21 from my dad in 1988.kept it for 7 years and liked it alot.heavy for a 21 but it was good in rough water.
I'm intrested in buying a 1978 Kona. 20 ft.(looks like a mini daycruser),BBF,Berkeley jet, twin 20 gal. fuel tanks. My question is, I've owned 18-19 footers in the past, am I going to be disappointed by the performance of this boat? Since this will be my first larger boat, any opinion of the kona will be apprecated.

How much?

Is it this boat...
1978 Kona 20' Day Cruiser (http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/5/0/78668350.htm) ?
If it is then, very good step up boat. My dad had that same model for a summer back in the early 90's. Boat had a nice ride, with no porpoise. Performance: you may see 60 or 65 if conditions are right, but 30-35 will be your main cruising speeds. The only downside to the boat was the seating or lack there of.
How much?

The seller is asking around $8900.00. Might be a little much, but the boat is pretty nice. By the way, let me toot your horn and tell you what a good job you and your friends have done with the Spectra web site. I also enjoyed the Hot Boat write up you got in the Feb.2001 issue. Way to go.

Yes it is.The seating is just what my wife is looking for. 60 mph seems good for a boat that size, would you agree? Did you find the Ford did a good job of pulling skiers out of the hole? Thanks for the input.
fstdraw,
IMO, the Kona is worth 4500.00 to 5000.00. For $8900.00 you could find a much better boat.
THanks for the kind words regarding trhe Spectra web site.

I had a Kona like that. The stringers were completely shot. The front of the stringers were not glassed over allowing water to seep in. Check the stringers and trandsom wood carefully. I never got it into the water because of the rotten wood. I ended up parting out the boat.
MikeC from RJB had one of those. He was running 58mph with a 455 Olds, a stock pump (with diverter and loader). It wasn't a fresh motor either. You should be able to hit 60 mph with the BBF I'd think. Spectrabrent's right though. $8900 seems pretty steep.
Purrefecttremor----Thank you for the input, very helpful
