Thread: Ford engine ?

I have the opportunity to buy a 76 LTD Landau, C-6 trans, 9" rear end, owner claims it's a 460 engine. Is it? VIN 6U64A138323. I thought 460s were only in Lincolns. I'm thinking maybe it's a 429. Anyone know where I can input that info. on the net and get answers? I'm thinking it would be nice to buy this whole car, getting an engine that I know runs, with accessories. And if I build another (spare) engine, I could put it in the car and drive it to make sure it runs Ok.

429s were discontinued after 74 for pass. car use. It is likely a 460 unless its been swapped. Also make sure its really a big block, could be a 351M/400, some people don't know the difference. 351Ms and 400s share the same C6 trans/bell hsgns. and are used with both engine familys.

SB ,LTD's had 429 "N" code up to 1973 and started "A" code [460] the same year ,up to 1977.A friend of mine had a 1972 LTD with a 429 we took for a round trip from Vancouver to San Diego in 1976.Loved that car, never missed a beat ,even through Death Walley in 119 degree heat. The 351 and 400 was also common for fords at that time, but all the LTD's I saw had BB's ,until later when all fords looked like POS.

The later motors are heavy smoged.Early 429s and 460s were the best.Ford put out 4 bolt mains in some of their Truck,Cobra and Boss motors.429 blocks and 460 blocks are interchangeable ,but consult with an expert for interchangability. They are getting hard to find. The later motors have lowered compression .They all will work in boats if hi power isn't an issue

SB, when looking at the motor, is the thermostat in the intake manifold or is it on the front of the block itself? 429/460 engines have wet intake manifolds. 351c, 351m/400m have dry intakes. The thermostat is in the block and not on the intake.

Spectras, I don't doubt that it is a 460, but Ford also put C-6 trannies behind 351/400m engines.

SB Friend on mine bought one just for the 460 years ago. Had everything you mentioned plus the 9" was posi and had disc brakes. Had a trailering package.

Thanks. It looks like those LTDs did have a 460, the 5 letter in the VIN is "A", meaning 460. Still wondering if that info is on the net, I found it in a library book. Finally, I'm aware of changing the heads and cam when using a model year engine after 1970. But is there any other reason for needing to stick with an earlier one (68-70)?

My experience has shown the 68-70 model blocks are a bit thicker.
