Popcorn!! Does anybody have any popcorn??
This subject comes up at least a few times a year.. Remember that there are idiots in every type of boat out there.. I know some people with offshore boats who use them in the river, but they use them in ocean the majority of the time.

Cole13, the issue you describe is not a result of the boat size and in-and-of-itself. The problem with that scenario was that the person driving the boat was not aware of, or just chose to ignore, the counter-clockwise rotation. That can happen to someone in a 16 footer or a 40 footer. Sorry you had to experience that.

Oh look everybody its the VILLAGE IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So was that you who was on the wrong side of the lake who went head on with me on saturday and then turned the wrong way as I was going 100MPH.......Not a happy camper.....
If it was you .... You need to learn the rules of boating and what to do when two boats meet head on and what side of the lake to drive on....... If not Sorry.......

I agree that it can happen with any size boat! But is it really necessary to drive a boat that fast on the river, with so many other boats around you. Last time I looked I did not have any brakes. I have one benefit of owning a jet, is that I can throw it into reverse at most any speed to slow down a little but I am still going forward. It is really scary to watch these boats doing that speed through the gorge.
I was also wondering, is it really that much fun to run a boat that big on the river. I would think that you guys would be scared to hit another boat? And why would you put a 2 or 300,000 boat on the beach, just to party? you can do that in a pontoon for 2 or 3000, and still have 297000, to put your kids through school!!

Well, everyone has their different opinions on what boat is right for them. Personally I like them all, big or small, it doesn't matter. I love the little 18' boats, but it is not the ideal boat for the type of boating that I do. I enjoy going to both Havasu and Parker and a low profile 18' boat will get beat up in some of the water there. In ideal conditions, they are fine, but not when it gets rough. That is where a bigger boat comes in. In a bigger boat you dont get the shit beat out of you in the rough stuff. The other benefit is that you CAN take them to the ocean if you want. Sometimes Havasu is as rough as the ocean so why not have an ocean boat?
I am going to be stepping into something in the 35-40' range in the near future and I think that it is the right size boat for me. Personally I don't enjoy tubing as much as I do going on a speed run or having the ability to run down to Havasu Springs for breakfast at 100+ That to me is fun! It is also nice that you can pack your friends in the boat with you and not have to worry about them getting beat up.
Now, for a couple of comments that rubbed me the wrong way. First, if I am driving my boat, I DO NOT have a drink until the boat is on the trailer. Doesn't matter if I am in a 15' boat or a 40' boat. Doesn't happen and I know quite a few of my friends who have the same discipline that I do. If we decide to use my boat and I do want to drink, I don't mind giving my keys to a DD. The DD's that I use I have all the confidence in the world that they can drive my boat. If not, why would I accept liability for their actions. They can drive and I don't have a problem letting them drive. Trust me, before I let them step behind the wheel, I know that they can handle it and I have checked them out before.
Second comment was regarding the housing market. You are making a general assumption that everyone is cashing out on the rising real estate boom to afford their boats. That right there might be true for some people, but I also know of others that work their ass off and decide that they cant take their money with them when they go, so they buy the toys that they want. Personally I would never finance any toy what so ever, but that is just me. Who cares how they got the money. Just because they can afford to pay for a $500k+ doesn't mean that they are leveraged to the max. Maybe they worked their ass off and now they are playing. Either way, it is no one else's business how they do it.
Hopefully one day I can afford to have a couple of boats in my stable. One of which would definitely be a 21'ish foot V drive, and another being a big 40'ish cat. That way I can go feel the rush that a little boat brings and still not be limited by the water and how many people I can bring.
As for bad drivers, they come in all size of boats. Just because you are in a big boat doesn't give you the right to be an asshole driver. Just my .02

If someone is out buying $300k boats and can not afford their child's education, their priorities are in the wrong location. I would venture to say that the dominant portion of the people you are talking about do not have to worry about their child's education or providing for their families. It has already been taken care of.
