WASHINGTON - The Senate voted to build 370 miles of triple-layered fencing along the Mexican border Wednesday, and clashed over citizenship for millions of men and women who live in the United States illegally.
Amid increasingly emotional debate over election-year immigration legislation, senators voted 83-16 to add fencing and 500 miles of vehicle barriers along the southern border. It marked the first significant victory in two days for conservatives seeking to place their stamp on the contentious measure.
The prospects were less favorable for their attempt to strip out portions of the legislation that could allow citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants and create new guest worker programs.
The Senate acted in a volatile political environment, as the White House struggled for a second day to ease the concerns of House Republicans who contend that President Bush favors amnesty for illegal immigrants.
Thousands of demonstrators massed a few blocks from the Capitol demanding immigrant rights.
Construction of the barrier would send “a signal that open-border days are over. ... Good fences make good neighbors, fences don’t make bad neighbors,” said Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala. He said border areas where barriers already exist have experienced economic improvement and reduced crime.

Every immigrant in this country has the same rights as you and I. Why cant these protestors call it what it is "Illegal Immigration". It just doesn't sound as good. "Thousands of demonstrators massed a few blocks from the Capitol demanding illegal immigrant rights" Wow just doesn't sound as powerful

Bet they hire some undocumented workers (illegals) to build the thing.

I actually heard somewhere that news agencies were telling their reporters to lose Illegal Immigrants from their vocabulary.
I think the fence is a good 1st step, but what about all the illegals that are already here? Something needs to be done about them as well.
At least we are working to slow down the influx of illegals into our country...

Build the fence and step up enforcement and fine employers $10,000 per illegal immigrant found working and this $hit ends now. Immigrants have the right to leave if they are here illegally ... all 12 million of them. Let them get in line to sign up for a temporary worker program and re-enter legally. There should be no amnesty and no social benefits for illegals. If they want citizenship bad enough, they will do it legally just like everyone else. If they just want to make a buck, then sign up for a temporary work permit and go home when your pockets are full or your permit expires.

Now take a moment and email the White House and your congressmen. I did and Fienstein wrote back. She's full of liberal $hit, but she has one more tick on the tote board against liberalizing our immigration policy. When enough voters are pissed, the dip $hits listen. Write them everyday. The more the better. You don't have to wait for an election to be heard. Make sure the email subject line makes clear your position on what you're writing about. Venting on Hot Boat won't make a difference although you might feel better.
