Here's a little update for you guys on the mandella project, it's getting a little further every day, trying to get as much done as i can while i have free time at the shop.
Finished building the upright support that will help hold the steering gear, it also doubles as a channel to hide any wires and hoses that will be run up to the dash for gauges etc. Also machined all 6 fill necks for the Monza gas caps out of aluminum tubing, single tool thread cut on the lathe. Fabricated the shaft log base out of stainless, just got it back from the polisher. Here are the pics.
Rough cut of the main and center peice, the end cap is milled out to allow an extra 3/8" of room inside the channel. Since i already had to make the fixture on the rotary table to cut the channel i decided to ball endmill the part for looks.

Finished.

There will be cap that runs on top of the stringer and under the bench seat where all the wires etc will run.

Here are the fill necks, I machined one complete first to make sure everything was tip top, the aluminum tubing's inside and out wasnt concentric so on the next 5 i chucked from the inside so they would be perfect. you can see the bore on the first one i had to make so i could finish cutting the part down without chucking the threads.

Very, Very NICE...

It's been a while, any updates to your project Mandella? Sandman.
We've put it to the side while we have been all our customers ready for summer, and we're in the middle of converting the schiada SR-22 into a play boat sleeper. We should be going back full steam ahead on the mandella a couple weeks after memorial day. gonna have to start building a trailer soon.
I saw your project for the first time yesterday. It's awesome. I also have a 69 Mandella long deck, 427 BB Chevy, that I've had for almost 30 years. I ready to put it back on Apache Lake (in Arizona) very soon. Eddie McFetters Sr. in Tucson built the boat back in the early 70's. It's mostly original. If I can figure how to send pictures, I will.

Hey Sandman. What color is your Mandella? I'm trying to figure out who you are.My 66' shortdeck was built by eddie Sr. And restored by Eddie Jr. about 8 yrs ago. I have known the McPheeters for about 40 yrs. Here's a pic of mine.

It's white now but originally yellow. I bought it from the original owner back in the early 80's and he's the one that told me that Eddie Sr built it. I've never met Eddie Sr. only Eddie Jr at Apache Lake once. I hang out with an old guy on the Northwest side of town by the name of Bill Hargis. Bill's been running V Drives at Lake Apache since the 60's. He currently runs a gray and blue Hallet blown BB Chevy VDrive. He knows all the old guys of the day and says he remembers when Eddie Sr built my boat. I'm in the process of restoring it now. It's been sitting for a long time and Bill's been after me to get it back on the water. I also have a 79 Eliminator Day Crusier, BB Chevy, automatic, with a prop outdrive that I've run out at Apache for all these years. I've seen your Mandella up there just never got a chance to talk to you. Maybe this year.

that's some real nice work. I've noticed in a few of your posts you take the time on the set ups/jigs. did you water jet the plates or do it all on the mill?
