I was reading powerboat magazine tonight and a reader asked a question in the tech pages. He asked if av gas contains ethanol. His concern was ethanol messing up his fiberglass tanks. The answer he got was no av gas does not contain ethanol because it causes detonation. Is this correct? Is ethanol and methanol the same. Methanol is what is commonly referred to as alcohol right.

Ethanol is made from soybeans, methanol is made from fossil fuels, hydrogen + carbon monoxide through a catalyst bed.
I "HEARD" the New E85 fuel(85% ethanol/15% gasoline) is over 100 octane.Their are some guys with turbos testing it and found you can run higher boost compared to gasoline.Just have to burn more of it.So don't understand the part about engine knock with ethanol

The big problem with ethanol in boats is that it absorbs water. Once the water is in it, you cannot separate it. In fact, because of this ethanol has to be carried by truck, instead of running in pipes like gasoline can.
It also likes to eat seals and other rubber and plastic parts in motors that are not designed for it. This is why there are warning labels on a lot of merc engines about running fuels containing alcohol
