Thread: No Oil Cooler

Second Year On A Rebuilt Stock 454 In My Tahiti Jet, Runs Great. Thinking About Installing An Oil Cooler. The First High Speed Run Of The Day Seems To Be The Fastest And After That Lifters Get A Little Noisy And Not As Strong. Switched To 50 Weight Oil After 40 Weight Break In And It Helped. I'm Thinking The Oil Might Be Thinning After It Gets Hot.

NO OIL TEMP. GAUGE YET, BUT I JUST ORDERED A OIL COOLER FROM REX.
WILL THIS AFFECT MY OIL PRESSURE AT ALL?
WILL HALF INCH OIL LINES BE SUFFICE?

Are you running a covered engine?
If so, my local jet boat guru will virtually guarantee you am 50RPM loss AFTER the first drive of the day, and I can confirm it. This is due to the heat load under the hood thinning the air. I used to think it would clear out from air usage by the engine, but it does not, and never has. This has proven to be true in my 454's orriginal stock form for 26 years and her current moderately moddified form for the last 3 summers.
Moderately modded is much higher lift cam than orriginal, RPM Air Gap manifold, K&N filter/spark arrestor, and jacketed thru-transom headers with 4" outlets. Still an 8.?:1 engine.

A temp gauge will tell you if the oil is getting hot enough to be causing a problem which will tell you if you even need the cooler. Oil temperature is directly related to oil pressure.
I personally like the block mounted Dan Olsen coolers. Cleaner.
Could be other issues as mentioned above.
