Hi guys im new to the threads and to jet boats..I just bought a 74 hondo a little less than a week ago and I have some questions on it that im sure most of you guys can answer.
    1. For the water distribution valve..how much should i release it and what is the normal op. temp. for a BBC 396..around 160 or so?I did a test run at lake perris on friday and my temp was at around 110-120..so should i close the valve a little more or is that a good temp to be running at?
    2. I bought the boat and realized that it didnt have a dipstick which freaked me out because I had never seen a motor without one, so is there a way I can add one to my motor?there should be a plug on each side of the block to put one right?
any help would be greatly appreciated,
    thanks

    Nice boat,
What pan do you have? It should be on the passenger side. The eas if installation of a new dipstick will depend on the pan (since that is where it is located).
Yes, 120 is too cold. 160 should be fine.

Put the boat on the water and adjust the valve at idle. You want to idle anywhere between 160 and 190, so adjust the valve for that. When the boat is moving at speed you will run a little colder since you'll have more water flowing in from the pump, but when you slow down to an idle the temp will go back up to where you adjusted it to.
A better way to do it is to buy a thermostat kit specially for jet boats. Hardin Marine makes them and you can buy them at CP Performance. They're about $125 but well worth the money IMHO.
Now before you adjust the temp, find out the compression specs for that motor. VERY IMPORTANT!!! If it's a high compression motor (10:1 and up) you may not want to adjust all the way to 190 to keep from preignition/detonation if the compression is high.

Yep, dipstick provision SHOULDF BE on the passenger side of the pan, unless you have an aftermarket pan without provision. Should be easy, unless, no provision, then yoiu alter/repalce the pan.
My Chevy runs about 170 at idle, about 140 cruising, which is normal. I have no condensation problems, not for 29 years anyhow. 110/120 is too cold, but it doesn't take much valve change, go small increments.
    Nice looking boat.
