Thread: Horsepower Options. MPG or bragging rites?

We have the 340, 360 380 or 400 HP Vortex's options on the new Wakeboard Boat we're ordering.
The 360 gets teriffic fuel burn, and the gph drops geometrically as the HP options increase, with just a slight increase in noticable pulling power.
Seriously considering the 400hp just to do it.
Anyone go the full route and get the mega HP motor in their Wakeboard/ski boat?
    Any good reasons to?

Resale Value?? I would think it would be easier to sell a boat with more HP.

Also remember, you are still talking about small blocks. Even though the the motor is capable of making 400hp, most of the time it is not. You will be just cruising. What I have seen with friends boats , is that , regardless of the HP rating of the Vortec, the milage is very comparable. Think about it this way, how often are you actually at wide open throttle? Go for the big motor, you won't be disappointed. And like OutColed said, resale.

    Hey TPC..
FWIW, I don't know if it makes any difference to you, but some of the H.O. engines require premium fuel. When we bought our Sanger DLX, it had the 320HP engine, and runs on regular. Best Buddy has a Sanger DXII with the "Black Scorpion" option, and he has to run the 91-octane stuff. His boat is a bit lighter, narrower, more ski specific.
As far as performance goes, the only difference we can see is he has a top end edge of about 3 MPH. No pulling difference, just a big diff when filling up.
You thinkn' maybe to bring that thing north this summer? I can show you some lakes that'll make you drool..

I have the 340 in my boat. Top end is about 41-42 mph. With the same boat and the 360 it is 44 mph and even with 400 top end is 48 mph. Overall you find they all work very well under load and the great HP is better if you are running a lot of ballast. I had over 1700 lbs of people and ballast last time out it ran the same out of the hole and top end only dropped to 39. Overall the hull design of wakeboats will create a slow boat. I made up my mind to get better fuel economy with my new boat vs speed. I 3/4 of a tank on a weekend trip now (30-35 gallons) vs the 70 gallons I was going through with my jet. What boat are you going to order? The biggest engine I would have ordered was the Malibu 383 Hammerhead. With Tige the 360 HT engine would just burn more gas and I don't run much ballast so it was not cost effective for me. I have been very happy with the performance of my 340. I spend the extra money on my stereo. My new moto is i don't go fast I go loud!

Guys are talking resale but you will find most wakeboarders are not into the big engine but a strong engine that will pull all day on a tank of gas. Most guys like the 340-360 unless they are in altitude then the opt for the big blocks.
