i have an absolutely stock 88' indamar 454 in my eliminator and am wordering how beneficial a new carb. and msd ignition would be for overall performance and reliability

Has it been rebuilt or is it the original 88? If original, might want to think about a rebuild for a little more ooomph. MSD or any other ignition works in combination with other things and a stock motor won't see much improvement with it.
