When I moved my back issues of hot boat got thrown away so I cant remember if it was on the boards or in the mags but, I remember some member took a 502 short block changed the cam and added afr heads and I am sure some otherthings and ended up with over 600hp. Anyone remember?

I thought it was but I wasnt sure. Cyclone are you giving up any secrets? I would like to do this to my 22 Daytona sterndrive. And I would realy like to do it with a single carb if possible.

i have cyclones old comp cams solid roller cam that was in the single carbed 502 he was running in the rogers (AKA the randy killer). let me know if you are interested in it. i believe it dynoed at around 720hp but cant remember the rpms. it ran real strong when i rode in it. the bottom end was stock as far as i remember. i think he just put the AFRs, solid roller cam, intake, and a dominator carb. he would be the one to talk to about it though. maybe he did some secrets that never were leaked.

Here is an engine I spec'ed out for a friend 11 years ago. If you want some details you can PM me.
It was built with ported Brodix oval ports and only 9.2:1 compression we hit the 650 HP goal, but feel short of the 600 lbs. ft torque goal. We could have exceeded both with Mobil 1 in the pan and 200 degree oil temp. And for some reason the guy I spec'd it for wanted to run Trick race gas on the dyno. I told him over and over that at 9.2:1 it would probably make more power on pump gas.

Good luck with your project. This was a factory short block with bolt ons. With a Danny Crower (CrowerPower) custom Mech. roller cam.

Pretty sure Cyclones motor had an HP 950 carb and a victor jr manifold on it. Only reason I know is because I bought the parts used from him to run on my 548.

I was thinking stock bottom end also. I have a buddy with a full crate 502/502 he has been running in a scarab wide the fk open for 4 or five years with over 300hrs. & still going strong. When I get these $18000.00 quotes for motors it makes me wonder? I know you get what you pay for but if I could get 600hp or over with the stock 502 I am in. I would just do the 502/502 but I dont think it will be that big of a difference from the 496 h.o. 425hp that is in the boat now. I know this isnt a jet thread but I am not on the cats & tunnels buget with those guys over there. I hope I can still hang with you guys since I havent sold my jet yet.

I remember there was an article in one of the hotrod publications, using a ZZ502, and re camming it for more HP I have it written down as 625HP/600TQ @ 4600 the Cam was .615I and .636E with R43XLS plugs gapped @ .045

ok i dug up my test info on my old 502.
    -AFR 315 cnc heads
    - added the severed duty Tulip valves. AFR milled the heads to get the chambers down from 119cc to 110cc . this kept the compression ratio near stock (9.6:1).
    -Comp Cam mechanical roller Grind # c8VI 48768 / 4877B SR112.0
    Lobe lift .389 intake/ .393 exhaust / gross valve lift was .661 intake/.668 exhaust/ duration at .050 was 254 intake/ 260 exhaust with a 112 lobe separation/ valve lash .016 for both intake and exhaust
-Comp Cams Endure-X roller lifters, 1.7 ratio aluminum rockers
-Edelbrock Victor JR Air Gap intake with no additional port work or matching
-Holley 950HP carb-stock right out of the box
    -Moroso 11-quart pan
anyway the motor made over 700hp on 91 octane through a set of Bassett headers
and spun a race-prepped B-impeller about 5,800 rpm in my boat
the motor was ran hard and afterwards the heads were used on several of my motors. after 4 seasons i checked the valve springs and they were all within 10 pounds of stock. i have no doubts this setup will last awhile in a jet boat or other application.
    hope this helps
