Cicero (WSYR-TV) - State Police say one man is dead after a boat collision Thursday evening on Oneida Lake. The accident happened near Frenchman Island, about one mile off-shore.
State Police say John Kowalewski, 85, of Geddes had been fishing alone in his 19' Bayliner Capri between 4pm and 6pm, when his boat was hit by another. The second boat then fled the scene. State Police said Thursday night he second boat was moving at a high rate of speed and likely "flew over" the victim's boat when the boats hit.
Around 8pm, other boaters saw Kowalewski's boat adrift off of Frenchman's Island, with significant damage to it. They found Kowalewski in the boat, dead.
A large rescue effort then began to determine if there were other passengers in Mr. Kowalewski's boat that had been knocked overboard. State Police say through boater registration information, family members were able to confirm that Mr. Kowalewski had been alone on the boat.
State Police say late Thursday night, several occupants of the second boat contacted State Police personnel. The second boat was identified as a 20' 1996 Starcraft 2012. No one was seriously injured on that boat. Police are just beginning to figure out who was on that second boat, and continue to investigate.
Both boats are in State Police custody and are being examined by their Forensics and Accident Reconstruction Investigators. No arrests have been made yet.
