Every calculator I have seen mentions slip. What does that mean?

Every calculator I have seen mentions slip. What does that mean? It's the eficiency of the hull.One 20 foot boat will run faster than another with the same horse power.Generaly it's the bottom of the boat where slip is considered.For example a tunnel will have less slip than a v bottom.Generaly a boat will have anywhere from 6 to 15% slip.
