Can any one tell me anything good or bad about a 1970 Mercury 1350. Guess it was called the red stripe?

The old inlines were/are good engines. They are not the best to hotrod because of their crossflow design. They run very smooth. The only problem I know of is the decaying of the insulation of the wiring harness. But that happens to almost all old Mercs. The only other drawback is the way they are put together. You have (or are suppose) to install the complete rotating assmebly in to the block all at one time. Never done it, but from what I have seen, it is not the easiest thing to do, especially w/o special tools.

I hear they don't tolerate low octance gas very well.

THe guy I bought the boat from said to run regular (87) through it. I was wondering if thats a bad idea. I have a 1981 18' Nordic witha 175 Mariner and was told to always run 92 in it. Always have and had no problems. Wondering if I should run 92 in the 1350?

Sorry Dog is right about that. The cross flows have more sharp edges due to the piston dome/deflector. I would only run premium gas. 100% synthetic oil will help limit the carbon build up too.
