Tunnel Victims' IDs Still Unknown

As the job to get the Newhall Pass truck tunnel reopened in a month goes out to bid, investigators are still looking for answers into the fiery crash that claimed three lives and they have yet to identify the victims.
Capt. Ed Winter of the county Coroner's Office said he is still waiting on dental records needed to identify the victims.
"They're not identified yet," he said. "We're still waiting on dental records."
Two men and a 6-year-old child died Oct. 12, and 10 others were injured, when a pileup occurred inside the 550-foot tunnel of the southbound Interstate 5. All told, the accident involved 30 commercial vehicles and one passenger vehicle.
In a news release issued Friday, Caltrans is requesting that companies wanting to bid on the project attend a mandatory pre-bid meeting, the purpose of which is to increase the pool of companies and certified small businesses participating in transportation projects.
The repair work planned by the department calls for slab replacement, repairs to a concrete barrier and metal beam guard rail, as well as drainage and landscaping.
Aiming to speed up the repairs, Caltrans is offering an "incentive/disincentive clause to encourage early completion."
The chosen bidder stands to earn a $1.7 million bonus for completing the $9 million project by Nov. 20, which is before the Thanksgiving holiday.
On the flip side of the deal, the chosen bidder failing to complete the contract in a 30-day period will cause the contractor to owe the state $150,000 per day for each day of uncompleted work over 30 days plus liquidated damages.
Bids will be opened on Monday, Oct. 29, at 10 a.m.
Truckers interviewed days after the collision told The Signal that speed limit signs posted on the freeway had been changed to 55 mph from 45 mph, permitting truckers to enter the darkened and winding tunnel at higher speeds.
A Caltrans representative told The Signal that an investigation was under way into how and why the speed limit was changed.
Caltrans spokeswoman Judy Gish told The Signal on Friday that the investigation is ongoing, with no estimated time of completion
