How long do you THINK or have you had the experience and held on to an engine long enough to know?
Let's say all with proper maint.
    Service every 20-30 hrs
    600/700 SCI Mercs
    Teague 800/900
    TPI 848/900/1000+ ( 200ax whipples on them)
    Pfaff 700/900
I know the Mercs from what I hear go 500-600 without any major issues... Anyone know about these customs?

My guess would be around 400 hrs if serviced every 15-20 hrs and driven responsibly.

I would agree with this. If treated right(not ruinning full throttle on the rev limiter all day) and serviced properly I would say the motor will last longer than you own the boat.

    Interesting subject.
However, I think to many variables come into play in the equation. The question of whether to refresh---rebuild---remanufacture a marine engine is a case by case formula---versus a benchmark hour interval.
Generally, speaking I would think a refresh at about the 250/350 interval. For some boaters that is longer than most keep the boat so they never really need to address the issue.
    Respectfully,

My Eickert 850 goes for 450-500 hours before you even have to begin to think about freshening the motor according to the engine builder..

My buddy has a Pfaff 700 with over 200 trouble free hours. He originally figured he would have to rebuild the valve train and top end at this point, but after talking to Gordy he is good for at least another 200hrs, which of course bummed him out since he wanted to do the new whipple charger.
