Fiery crash closes State Route 95
    STAFF REPORTS
    Friday, May 23, 2008 10:13 PM MST
At least two people were killed in a head-on collision on State Route 95 at milepost 170 about five miles south of Lake Havasu City late Friday afternoon.
State Route 95 was expected to be closed until at least midnight.
The collision involving a car and a tractor-trailer occurred at about 4:40 p.m. The driver and passenger of the truck were treated at the scene and refused transportation to the hospital, said Lake Havasu Fire Department Battalion Chief Rick Felish.
The bodies of the victims were recovered from in front of the tractor-trailer, Felish said. It was unknown Friday night how many passengers had been in the car at the time of the collision. Fire department officials were still going through the wreckage at 8:45 p.m. in search of other possible victims.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the truck, which was carrying produce, was traveling southbound and the car was headed northbound when the car apparently crossed the center line and hit the truck head-on.
The car and the tractor-trailer were consumed in flames, and debris was strewn along the highway for about 150 yards. Authorities were able to identify the car as a Chevrolet Malibu by its back plastic bumper, the only piece of the car that was identifiable, Felish said. “Everything else was burned or had disintegrated,” he said.
Lake Havasu City Fire and Police, Desert Hills Fire, Arizona Department of Public Safety and Arizona Department of Transportation responded to the scene.
The Lake Havasu Fire Department sent three engines, a hazmat response truck, a cert team and two command staff.
Desert Hills responded with a tanker and a commander.

Parker man killed in accident near Lake Havasu City

    Compiled from staff reports
A Parker man was identified Wednesday as one of two victims in a fiery accident on State Route 95 about five miles south of Lake Havasu City late Friday afternoon.
Jeffery Bacon, 43, of Parker, and Dirk O. Little, 47, of Payson, were declared dead at the scene when their four-door Chevrolet passenger car smashed head-on into a tractor-trailer at about 4:20 p.m., Friday, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, James F. McCarter, 47, of DeFuniak Springs, Fla., and his passenger Amber N. Cook, 31, of Nogales, were not injured. Both were wearing safety restraints at the time of the collision, said DPS.
Bacon, who was driving, apparently lost control of the car traveling northbound crossed the painted center lane divider and ran head-on into the southbound tractor-trailer, the DPS said.
After impact, the Chevrolet became engulfed in flames with the two victims still inside. Both men were burned beyond recognition causing difficulty identifying the men, DPS spokesman Harold Sanders said earlier this week. It was unknown whether either of the men were wearing safety restraints.
Debris and smoldering car parts were strewn along the highway for about 150 yards. SR 95 was closed for most of the night.
Because Bacon was determined to be at fault, no one was cited, the DPS said.
