Thread: 8-ply railer tires vs radial tires

Well, I have a 19' boat and a tandem axle trailer with car tires that are balanced. I've had one blow out due to worn out tires. I also have a 1 ton dually (2 door ext cab) which is dropped in the weeds, and I run car tires on that. Car tires are not rated for my truck, especially if I'm towing. I've never had a flat or blow out in 6 years of having my truck that way. With a 19' boat and a tandem axle trailer, you should not have a problem towing with the car tires that are balanced.
Another reason trailer tires are recommended is because most of the time a trailer is sitting, not being towed. Therefore you would need the stronger side walls to prevent tire damage that will cause a blow out, like with a car tire.

My last crew cab dually was bagged and body dropped on 255/60/16's and alcoas and towed my boat with no problems. Hell, my friend Bill had a set of 19.5-inch Alcoa's milled down to 19's and he runs 235/35/19's on his body dropped dually and tows an enclosed trailer.

I run 225/60/16 tires. Never had a problem.

All tires have a capacity rating, it is based on a numbering system from 0 to 279. A common size passenger tire like a Michelin Symmetry GNX P215/75R-15 100S has a capacity of 1764 lbs. The "100S" in the number refers to the load index, 100, and the speed rating, S (good for 112 MPH). Most 225/60/16s have a 97 index rating, or 1609 lbs.
Using car tires on a truck is no big deal, most people drive 'em like a car anyway. It will ride better and quieter. The problem is more with trailers. As I said, the stiff springs cause lots of sidewall flex. If you are towing a lightweight 19' jet boat on a tandem trailer, it probably won't matter. A heavy boat or a single axle is more of a concern.
