80hz wave is about 14 feet long.
100hz wave is about 11 feet long...
    Yes, I am a geek."
And you need at least a 1/4 wave function of that to be correct... right? Meaning, a 1/4 wave can accoustically reproduce a 1/2 wave which inverted can reproduce a full wave... I think what you're saying is that the note has develped after the 1/4 wave mark, but you wouldn't "hear" the full note until full term.
I don't understand the invert comment though...reversing is a step backwards. I think you mean redirect the wave to completeion, but the wave will travel through anything that is not thicker that the wave itself. You can put your finger on a tweeter @ 5000hz to block the sound because your finger is thicker than the note itself.
    Now my head hurts....

Half right. What I mean is... all the information carried on a full wave is within a 1/4 wave. A half wave is a duplication of a 1/4 wave, as it is a reciprocal wave, just different because of time, and on a horizontal path. A half wave is the same as a full wave, just turned upside down. So... (and now my head is starting to hurt...) a 1/4 wave propagation will accurately reproduce sound to the human ear, which is a complicated enough machine to resolve the missing tones.

I really appreciate all of the help!!
You may not know enogh to answer this question, but...
What is the best 12 to put in the seat base?
Will a fosgate work ok? Would another brand perform better?
I listen to all types of music (excluding country)
    mainly rap, rack, alternative.

There's a wide variety of good quality subwoofers that would fit the bill. While specific subs sound different than others, the most important thing to consider is the enclosure. Make sure its the right size as recommended by the manufacturer. Build it out of quality materials. I recommend 3/4" marine plywood for a boat. You can build it out of MDF but that will be heavier and less durable in the long run.
My own humble opinion is that you can find better sounding subs than what you have (What model Fosgates are they?). Some nice 12" units out there are Phoenix Gold Titaniums, Infinity Kappa Perfects, JL Audio's, etc....

If you were to do it in the seat base, I would do a pair of down-firing 12" subs (Phoenix Gold is my weapon of choice, although I am leaning towards Alumapro after CES) and re-construct your whole base. Designed properly, you will minimize the distortion created by being able to see a speaker and hear flutter, and should end up very loud having the floor to baffle off of. In addition, it will give you great box dimension. Look for just over 1 cubic foot for a PG, which subtracting your setback from the floor should work out perfectly.
Now, regarding design. I think you are going to need to make the top of it removeable, mount the speakers from the inside, and hope it seals to make it removeable. You will need to screw your base board into the floor, and bolt everything together on top of it.
Or... you could have some aluminum brackets made and polished to hold the enclosure in, while providing removeability in the event you need to pull interior for some reason.
    Good luck!
