Thread: SBC stroker questions

I am helping my uncle build a mild 383 for his 21' Hallet, we are thinking about using the existing 350 volvo penta 2 bolt block for the stroker platform. Would it be reasonable to use the 2 bolt caps with ARP main bolts? There are so many rotating assemblies available its staggering. There are 2 kits Summit offers, one is balanced and one is not, both have similar components, is it better to buy the balanced rot assy or let the machine shop handle balancing? My other question is in regard to which piston and head combo will offer the best flame propagation and power, here are the options I have explored so far. He would prefer to use an iron head. Please feel free to comment or correct, I'm no SBC expert.
    Opt. 1
    64cc L31 Vortec head
    Fel-pro .041 x 4.166
    -18cc KB piston
    0 deck height
    4.03 x 3.75 bore = 9.602 CR
    Opt. 2
    67cc World Products S/R Torquer (iron 170cc)
    Fel-pro .041 x 4.166
    -18cc KB piston
    0 deck height
    4.03 x 3.75 bore = 9.328 CR
    Opt. 3
    76cc World Products S/R Torquer (iron 170cc)
    Fel-pro .041 x 4.166
    -7cc KB piston
    0 deck height
    4.03 x 3.75 bore = 9.508 CR

my preference would be for the votec heads but that limits your intake choice
what length rods do you plan to use 5.565? 5.7 6.0
if 5.7 or longer don't forget to use small base dia cam to clear rods

as for the block 2 bolt with good bolts should be ok for applcation . either option on balance will work as long as your buying flywheel with kit

Jet rebel- If I'm not mistaken Havasu Hangin runs a 383 with the Volvo drive,he should be able to give you some good information.

Thanks guys, I was planning on using 5.7 rods, I had read about using a smaller base circle cam with that combo, I would assume Comp makes them for this application. Thats a good point about the flywheel, it doesn't appear as though the "balanced" kit comes with one. I suppose that means some balancing is required (flywheel). We will only be looking for 350-375 hp at 5200rpm's with this build, I'd think the Vortec Performer shouldn't hinder that goal.

400 flywheel will not work with Mercruiser. Not sure about Volvo.
Use the 350 flexplate and a counterweight that bolts on with the coupling. $10.00 or less at any speed shop.

I used to run a 407, 4.155 x 3.75, steel 5.7 rods, regular base circle cam. I did not think you had to worry about a small circle cam until you got up around 4" stroke. If you don't need it, I would avoid the smaller circle because it increases the loading on the lobes and lifters.
It also used an externally balanced 400 flywheel and balancer. At the time I was running an Alpha with the smaller coupler that bolted to the crank flange (as opposed to the larger Bravo unit that bolts to the flywheel).

From what I have read (which ain't much BTW), there can be clearance issues with a 5.7 rodded 3.75 stroke combo, depending on which rod and cam are used. But again my experience with stroked SBC's are limited to last nights web cruising. I'm sure I'll end up just comming up with a rough idea of the component list for this build-up and let a competant machine shop take care of the rest.

    Yep...I built a 383 for my Volvo.
I used an internally balanced (Scat) crank, and used my existing (350) flywheel- no worries.
I used 5.7 Eagle rods with a Crane (standard diameter) cam...no worries. TRW 10-1 pistons.
I went with the Edelbrock Performer (72cc) heads- very similar to those Torquers. Some mild porting really brought them to life.
I got 457 HP @ 5,300 RPMs out of my mouse motor (w/dry headers)...it makes a ton more torque than my old 280/350.
I would think 375 HP is very doable.
