I've always run a single 1/4" keyway. Never had a problem and have run 30 lbs of boost.Yep, 1/4 keyway opposite of the woodruff keys!!..

george at clay smith insisted on 2 keyways so that was good enough for me.

I would like to hear from someone who ran one
1/4" key in the balancer and had it shear on them. The impeller in the jet pump has a 1/4" key and takes all the engine hp and I never heard of anyone shearing that one. I think there are more factors to the single key vs. two key debate.
Was the balancer a good tight press fit to start with? Was the key made from some good material or just some hardware store scrap metal? Did the engine have a major backfire that caused the key to shear? Now if someones setup has only one woodruff key that would not have much cross section and would be a weak link. But a 1/4" key the full width of the balancer would have a lot of cross section.
You certainly could make a 1/4" key from 4340 material, Heat treat it and it would never shear.

Might be wrong but I think my ford is 1/4 and I have had no problems with it.

Just enlarged the original keyway to 1/4" on my 547 chevy with a 1071 mooneyham. Run 10 to 11 lbs of boost, haven't had a problem. Balencer is really tight on the crank.
