Took the V-drive apart, and this is what I found. Been together for two summers. Case ran cool at all times with Redline 70-90. Had noticed a little higher howl than usual toward the end of the season last year, was one of the reasons that it was taken apart, plus to change oil. Anyone have any idea what could have happened? Was set up with a .007 lash in the gears.

Sometimes you gotta chalk it up to "shit happens".
Most the time though there's a reason. Check the bearings first. If you have a sloppy bearing you've found your reason. Also check the shafts. They twist. How do the teeth that are not broken or damaged from sharpnal look? Do they show signs of abnormal wear or are they clean. Look for clues. If you find none then chalk it up to bad gears or bad setup. Bad gears do happen. How much HP is this boat?
Last but not least, it did have oil in it right? If it was leaking and got low on oil there's your answer. Just something I've seen.

Gears are 10 deg., cases are 10 deg. Oil was full, 500 to 550 HP. Gears may have a little wear on the trailing edge, but looked normal. No blueing due to heat.

You had mentioned .007 lash in your post. I think you'll find that .007 is not enough.

I have seen the same type of failure on a set of mis-matched gears. They were correct degree and ratio but they had different manufacture dates. Talked to Casale and was told that there are made in specific sets and cannot be interchanged.

    His were not mis-matched.
They were made in July, 1970.
I'm thinking a few people got their moneys worth outta that set.
