Thread: Kobe has to start coaching search all over again

It isnÂ’t easy being Kobe Bryant. Aside from getting in shape for the 2004-05 basketball season, preparing for a sexual assault trial and minding his family, he also has to raise ticket prices, meet with corporate clients, select the Laker Girls, design a seating chart for the press, woo potential free agents, assess the broadcast team, organize the PR staff, oversee the marketing campaign, gladhand celebrities, evaluate the doctors and trainers, assign parking spots and endure the obligatory night out on the town with Jerry Buss and his posse. This man sure wears a lot of hats.
But it takes that much work to run the Lakers, and more.
Now, Bryant bears the added burden of starting the search for a head coach all over again. It didn’t take him long to get rid of Phil Jackson — it happened over one meal between the Zen Master and Buss, and Kobe didn’t even have to pick up the tab — but he had to wait a week before getting turned down by Mike Krzyzewski. Apparently Coach K considered the five-year deal worth $40 million, then calculated how much his phone bills would be after repeatedly calling Duke officials from Los Angeles and begging to get his old job back, and decided it wasn’t worth it.
Therefore, KobeÂ’s short list got a little shorter.
Of course, Bryant himself is a free agent, and itÂ’s not guaranteed he will even return to the Lakers. But while he awaits KobeÂ’s decision, Buss has turned the entire operation over to his 25-year-old superstar in the hopes that he will appreciate the rush a professional athlete gets when given absolute and unprecedented power.
