I just got my boat (1979 hondo flat) turned over and my v-drive is located 84" from transem. Engine is going to be between 28" to 34". How will boat handle? 500hp 429 Ford and 10 dagree strut.

    Odin,
Sounds pretty close to where my old Hondo was set up. My old Hondo was set up for skiing & could fit 4 people in it. Which was nice for skiing but a little tough to get to work on the top end.
What do you wan't the boat to do?
Do you have a speed goal??

Not a race boat just one that runs good midrange and turns good.

I would go to 34 if its going to be a 2 seater. Your v-drive is correct.

I'm pretty sure my deal was not 84" to the transom. It think it was around 78"
But I am pretty sure 84" is not set up for top speed. Most runners & circle boats, including my Revenge are usually right around 96".
What really matters is prop. shaft angle. The one thing I know was I had a 7-8 deg. on the prop. shaft. Is your 10 deg. strut shimmed?, flat with the bottom or at an angle.
    I ran a 460 in my Hondo. 18% gear 6000 rpm. Big eared stellings prop. 11-1/2 x 16. 86mph
V-drive video (Jerry) is all knowing on this deal. When he returns we will know. Or try to get ahold of Wayne Metler. He built a bunch of the Hondo's & set up the Hondo that went after the Kilo record.

So where are you going to put the motor?, 6" is a lot and can make a big difference???!.. The v-drive goes at the end of the propshaft, the main concern is the angle, location and depth of the strut, when that is determined correct the v-drive will be where it's supposed to be, at the end of the propshaft!.. Sorry I cannot help with numbers on a Hondo, but I'm sure there's some here that can!..

I just went into the garage and my v-drive center to transom is 94". Remeasure to make sure you read 84. Motor to transom is 34". This in my 75 hondo t-deck runner.
