One thing to remember the "nailheads" got their names for a reason, they had some of the smallest valves around at the time, along with small ports. To make them work at a reasonable RPM/horsepower level does take a lot of work.
Had a running 401 complete with 1X4 aluminum intake, and finned alloy valve covers go throught he wrecking yard last year, and got crushed before I could get it out of the 66 Chev truck it was tanking around in.
Good torque off idle and into mid range, but not a lot of top end capability.
